Nigeria's public and financial services are increasingly delivered through digital channels. Pension portals, national identity systems, health insurance registration, and mobile banking now sit behind screens and applications that many senior citizens were never given the opportunity to learn. Without support, this shift risks leaving elderly Nigerians locked out of services designed to protect them.
Renewed Hope for the Elderly's Silver Digital Inclusion Initiative is built to close this gap with patience and respect. Through community-based training, senior citizens learn the essentials of using a smartphone, accessing digital identity and pension systems, navigating health and banking platforms, and staying connected with family. The aim is not to overwhelm, but to restore confidence and independence.
Digital literacy also protects elders from harm. As fraud and online deception grow more sophisticated, older citizens are frequently targeted. RHE's training places strong emphasis on fraud awareness, safe communication, and the practical judgement needed to recognise and avoid scams, so that greater connectivity brings greater security rather than new vulnerability.
The initiative aims to train half a million senior citizens by 2028, delivered through community centres, volunteers, and partnerships with technology and financial institutions. In doing so, RHE affirms that inclusion in Nigeria's digital future is a right that must extend to every generation, and that no elder should be left behind simply because the world moved online.
