Clean Cooking and the Health of Elderly Nigerians

Access to clean cooking energy is one of the most direct ways to protect the health of elderly Nigerians in the home.

For many elderly Nigerians, the kitchen remains a place of daily risk. Cooking over firewood, charcoal, and kerosene fills homes with smoke that damages the lungs, strains the heart, and worsens the very conditions that make later life more fragile. For senior citizens who spend long hours at home, this exposure is not occasional but constant, and its effects accumulate quietly over years.

Renewed Hope for the Elderly's Clean Energy Access for Elders Programme responds directly to this challenge. By providing liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinders and burners, alongside safety education and access to subsidised refill partnerships, the programme helps elderly households transition to cleaner, safer, and more reliable cooking. The result is not only reduced indoor air pollution but a meaningful improvement in daily health, comfort, and safety.

The health case for clean cooking is well established. Reducing exposure to household smoke lowers the risk of respiratory illness, eases the burden of cardiovascular strain, and protects the eyes from constant irritation. For elderly citizens managing chronic conditions, these gains can be the difference between independence and decline, and between a home that harms and a home that heals.

The programme is designed for phased national rollout, beginning with a pilot across six states, one in each geopolitical zone, before scaling toward a national ambition of one million elderly households. In pursuing this goal, RHE aligns elder welfare with Nigeria's broader clean energy transition, demonstrating that climate action and compassion for our senior citizens can advance together.
